Want to Switch Electric Companies?

Are you unhappy with your electricity provider? Are they charging too much? Do you want a provider who has better customer service or one that is better for the environment? Because you live in a state that has a deregulated electricity market, you have the power to switch.

Residents in the majority of Texas can choose from multiple electricity providers. Some of the providers available through ElectricityTexas include Reliant Energy™, TXU Energy, Direct Energy, First Choice Power, Green Mountain Energy, Texas Power, Amigo Energy and MXenergy.

Switching Made Simple

If you choose to switch electricity providers, all you need to do is order service from a new provider through ElectricityTexas. You don't need to contact your current provider in order to switch. There will be no interruption in your electricity service. Your switch will be effective as of the next regularly scheduled meter read date, unless you request a special meter read. Until your service is switched, you will continue to receive bills from your old provider. Once your service is switched, it may take up to another month before you receive a bill from your new provider.

Electricity Facts

The Electricity Facts Label presents the following items in a standardized format so that you can compare different providers.
  • Electricity Price: The provider will detail the average price per kWh for 500 kWh, 1000 kWh, and 1500 kWh. Providers will also detail their monthly customer service charge and seasonal pricing.
  • Contract Terms: If they have one, the provider is required to disclose the minimum term and penalty for early cancellation.
  • Sources of Power Generation: The provider will identify the sources used to generate their electricity. Their percentages will be listed beside a list of the average usage for electric generation for the state of Texas.
  • Emissions: The provider will list the types of emissions and waste created per kWh of electricity generated. The chart will identify if the emissions are better than the Texas average or worse than the Texas average.
